Annual Fund 2013

Thank you

In the academic year 2012/13, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of The Courtauld Institute of Art, which made this an extra special year for the Annual Fund. In April, 13 Courtauld students and recent graduates spoke to 573 alumni and Friends and raised a wonderful £58,748 pledged over five years. We also created a special 80th Anniversary Annual Fund Appeal video, featuring four Courtauld students – click here to view.

The Annual Fund is a vital part of our philanthropic support, every year providing significant revenue funding. The commitment of our loyal donors, whose gifts provide a regular income stream, cannot be overstated but we are also delighted to have welcomed so many new donors this year to the Annual Fund community. Simply put, we would not be able to maintain the level of excellence in our teaching and Gallery without all of your generous donations. Thank you so much.

The report offers some examples of the areas the Annual Fund has supported.
We hope this report demonstrates how vital your support is and the wide variety of areas your donations have benefitted.

How much was donated in 2012/13?

For the academic year beginning on the 1 August 2012 and ending on the 31 July 2013, The Courtauld Annual Fund received donations from 520 donors totalling £104,838.62. This included £11,109.75 of tax reclaimed from Gift Aid.

Every year, we give donors the opportunity to decide what area of our work they wish to support. Here is how the funds raised in 2012/13 were allocated:

GREATEST NEED                                       £93,683

We are very grateful for unrestricted donations to the Annual Fund, which give The Courtauld the flexibility to spend the money where the need is greatest.

This year, donations given to the greatest need were combined with donations to the Gallery (£923) and contributed to a vitally important project to upgrade and replace extensive parts of the Gallery’s environmental control plant. The plant was installed in 1999 and much of it had reached the end of its working life – not surprising, given that it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! This major project aimed to replace failing equipment, thereby improving our ability to maintain the appropriate conditions for our works of art and those on loan to us, and secondly to build resilience into the system.

The main bulk of the work took place this summer and autumn; it involved replacing all 32 existing room conditioning units in the Gallery itself, which required a rolling programme of room closures, plus the significant task of installing modern equipment into the challenging spaces of a Grade 1 listed building.

This project is nearly finished and once it is completed The Courtauld Gallery will have a robust system which will provide the best possible conditions for our world-class collections for the next decade and beyond.
