Victory Over the Square

Students from Maria Fidelis Convent School in London explored the early 20th century (pre 1917) Russian Art collection on display at The Courtauld Gallery with academic Dr Natalia Murray and artist Yelena Popova. Examining the works of Kandinsky, Malevich and other avant-garde Russian and European artists of the time and creating their own visual and artistic responses, students produced groups Manifesto and artworks.

The students were involved in a thorough creative process, using collage, scuptural forms and abstraction to explore key art writings of the time. They even thought of the project’s name Victory over the Square, which was inspired from Malevich’s 1913 Opera Victory over the Sun.

‘I really enjoyed creating art related to our own Manifesto, it has made me look at art and do art differently’ – year 11 Marial Fidelis Student

‘This project really added to the student’s knowledge and understanding of a specific moment in time in art. Not only did they explore new artistic process, but they also developed their analytical and thinking skills’ – Maria Fidelis Art Teacher
