Alumni and Supporter Data Processing Notice

The Development Office helps former students to keep in touch with The Courtauld Institute of Art and with fellow alumni, as well as to provide opportunities to support the work of The Courtauld Institute of Art.

This statement explains how The Courtauld Institute of Art handles and uses data about its alumni, members, current and future supporters. This statement is in addition to The Courtauld Institute of Art’s Student Data Protection Notice.

The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London is registered as a Data Controller under the Data Protection Act 1998. This notice explains the following information:

As alumni we collect your data via the enrollment process while you are a student at The Courtauld Institute of Art, or if you are a supporter or member we collect your data as part of your gift processing. Records we hold contain information on contact details, education, career and achievements. Contact and relationships with The Courtauld (since graduation for alumni) are also recorded, as well as event participation and donations. In some cases other information is added; special categories of data you provide for a specific purpose (such as an event); information about your family and other relationships, financial data; and information about your areas of interest and potential support to The Courtauld. We also use data from reputable public sources.

The information you provide is use by The Courtauld to communicate with you in a variety of ways for the following purposes:

  • The promotion of the relationship between The Courtauld and its alumni for mutual benefit
  • University-related fundraising initiatives involving alumni and other supporters
  • Eliciting non-financial support (e.g. careers support for students and assistance with student recruitment activities)
  • Sending invitations to alumni events and other events of interest organised by The Courtauld
  • University mailings, both hard copy and electronic (e.g. Alumni magazines and newsletters)
  • Promoting the benefits and services available to alumni


Where necessary The Courtauld will disclose, to external bodies, relevant items of your personal data as set out below.

For the provision of student services such as the Careers Group,  Housing Services, Research Degrees Office, ULU, Diploma Production etc

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and its agents

Such as the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and the Quality Assurance Agency.  You are also advised to refer to the collection notices on the HESA website:

UK Agencies with duties relating to the prevention and detection of crime, apprehension and prosecution of offenders, collection of a tax or duty, or safeguarding national security

For example: Benefit or Tax Inspectors, the Police, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as necessary, and with consideration of your rights and freedoms.


The Courtauld may from time to time make other disclosures without your consent. However, these will always be in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and your interests will be considered.
